As early as 1903, William Ongwen sold his first sweet pea seed. However, the story began two years ago, in the summer of 1901. One evening, after the choir practice, he took two choir members to visit many rows of sweet peas he planted and sent them to the flower market in London. William soon crossed sweet peas and provided large flower shapes of various colors. By 1914, his son, Charles, joined the cause, and later became one of the leading sweet pea breeders of the 20th century. The second son, Frank, was particularly interested in gladiolus. He was as famous for Gladiolus breeding as Charles for sweet peas. The company soon became a regular seeder, offering a wide variety of flowers and vegetables. This family not only cultivated sweet peas and gladiolus, but also dahlias, tomatoes and kidney beans. In the late 1950s, it decided to provide full-color packaged seeds to horticultural stores and new outlets known as garden centers. Until then, Unwins did not sell its seeds by mail order. The project has been a huge success and is responsible for the company's steady growth. Today, the company has the largest share of the amateur seed market in the UK. The company's breeding efforts are continuing, especially in sweet peas, which have the world's largest annual trial of sweet peas. Sweet pea seeds, like many other flower seeds, are commercially produced all over the world, including in the United States, Eastern Europe, Malta and the Continent of Europe, although few pea seeds are grown in the United Kingdom.
