About Sunspel

Thomas Arthur Hill founded the Sun. He was born in 1822, the 11th of 12 children, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. His father, John Pinkerton Hill, was a knitting manufacturer in Nottingham. Thomas followed his father in the knitting and lace trade. Steam power is about to usher in a period of tremendous change worldwide. The textile industry was one of the first manufacturing industries to accept this change, and Thomas Hill found himself at the core of the change. Thomas Hill was not only one of the great early British industrialists, but also a fabric innovator. His vision of making simple everyday clothes out of beautiful cloth has always been the idea of sunbathing. At the beginning of the 20th century, Sunshine Group established an important export business in the then British Empire and was one of the first British companies to export to the Far East. Company records show that a batch of SunSPEL garments in Hong Kong and China were on N.Y.Ki-Hirano Malu, and a German submarine was torpedoed and sunk in the Irish Sea in 1918. During this period, Sunspel also developed its unique island cotton fabrics, which came from the West Indies and were used in its most luxurious products.
